Beijing Opera

The Beijing Opera became to the national opera since the reign of the 3rd emperor Qian Long of Qing Dynasty.

At the time all the "dan", "chou" and "sheng" roles were played by male actors, (Female role called dan, male role called sheng, clown role called chou). Nowadays they are played separately by females and males. The Beijing Opera is famous for its colorful facial make up and fantastic costumes. According to sex, age and disposition, each role is characterized by different designs of facial make-up.

Pekin Opera combines stylized acting with singing, dancing, musical dialogue, martial arts and colorful make up. It's one of the "must-to-see" when you visit Beijing.
