Basic Facts
As capital city of Sichuan Province and covers an area of 12,400 square kilometres and population of 10 million, Chengdu
is over 2,500-year-old.
Paper money was first used here during the Song Dynasty.
There are some world cultural heritage sites here such as Qingchengshan and the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, Emei and Leshan Giant Buhha. Chengdu has enough historical sites to keep visitors entertained and don't forget to visit the Giant Pandas.

Qingcheng Shan & the Dujiangyan Irrigation System Construction of the Dujiangyan irrigation system began in the 3rd century B.C. This system still controls the waters of the Minjiang River and distributes it to the fertile farmland of the Chengdu plains. It is listed on the list of World Cutrual and Nature Heritage site in 2002. Mount Qingcheng was the birthplace of Taoism, which is celebrated in a series of ancient temples.聽It is so named because the mountains are green all year round. |

Emei Shan & Le Shan Giant Buddha The first Buddhist temple in China was built here in Sichuan, Province in the 1st century A.D. in the beautiful surroundings of the summit of Mount Emei. The addition of other temples turned the site into one of Buddhism鈥檚 holiest sites. Over the centuries, the cultural treasures grew in number. The most remarkable is the Giant Buddha of Leshan, carved out of a hillside in the 8th century and looking down on the confluence of three rivers. |

Sanxingdui Located 40km away from Chengdu, Sanxingdui is the largest ruins of Shu Kingdom and is considered the most important site for ancient Sichuan culture. In 1986, more than 10,000 relics dating back to 4,000 years ago including bronze, gold, jade, bone tools, pottery and ivory objects were brought to light. Six of relics have been uncovered here are "National Treasures" representing the best of the art of copper in China. |

Wolong Giant Panda Nature Reserve Sichuan Province is the home to Giant Pandas, a symbolic animal of the World Foundation for Wild Animal Protection. There are only an estimated 500 to 1,000 pandas left in the wild and most of them live in north-western Sichuan. The Wolong Nature Reserve is some 136km from Chengdu. Wolong, not only home to pandas, but also home to thousands of plants and 230 species of birds. The Giant Panda Breeding Research Base here is the place to see these celebrated creatures. |
