Heritage Sites: Dazu Rock Carvings

Basic Facts

Overlooking the confluence of the Yangtze River and Jialing River, Chongqing is an ancient city with 3000 years history and has long been a staging post for river journeys and a gateway to China's wild west. In 1997, Chongqing was made a municipality under the direct jurisdiction of the Central Government, the youngest among the four, the other three being Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai. The city has more than 300 scenic spots including the Urban Sightseeing of the City of Mountains, the Golden Tourist Route of the Three Gorges along the Yangtze River, and the Dazu Rock Carvings in Chongqing is one of world cultural heritages.

Dazu Rock Carvings
The steep hillsides of the Dazu area contain an exceptional series of rock carvings dating from the 9th to the 13th century. They are remarkable for their aesthetic quality, their rich diversity of subject matter, both secular and religious, and the light that they shed on everyday life in China during this period. They provide outstanding evidence of the harmonious synthesis of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.

Ciqikou Old Street
CiqiKou was once Chongqing's old harbour and the home of many of Chongqing's rich merchants. Architectures of Ming and Qing dynasties built along the town. Drangon dancing and temple fairs make Ciqi Kou a right place to really soak up the atmosphere of the Old Chongqing.

The Three Gorges Along The Yangtze River
Board the Yangtze River cruise at the Chaotianmen Dock, one comes to the world-famous Three Gorges. The Three Gorges consists of the Qutang, Wuxia and Xiling Gorge, stretching 193km. The section from Chongqing to Yichang offers splendid landscape. Tourist attractions along the banks such as Baidi Town, Shibaozhai, Temple of General Zhang Fei, Memorial Temple to Qu Yuan, and the magnificent Three Gorges Dam.
