Heritage: Mogao Caves
Basic Facts
Set on the edge of the Gobi desert, Dunhuang used to be the hub of the ancient silk road in terms of trade between China and Western world. As Buddhist oasis, Dunhuang has many famous tourist attractions including Mogao Caves, the Crescent Moon Spring by the Sounding Dune, Yangguan Pass, Ancient Sazhou Town etc.

Mogao Caves Known as the 1,000-Buddha Cave, the Mogao Caves were accidentally discovered in 1900 by an unassuming Taoist priest. Located 25km southwest of Dunhuang, Mogao Caves has 491 grottoes which enshrines 45,000 square metres of murals and 2,4000 painted sculptures of all dynasties. The Mogao Caves is one of the most significant collection of Buddhist artifacts ever uncovered. In 1987, the UNESCO listed it as a World Cultural Heritage site. |

Mingsha Shan & Crescent Moon Lake Mingsha Shan means "singing sand mountain" is located 6km southwest of Dunhuang. Climbing to the top of the cliff offers a majestic view of the surrounding desert, oasis and mountains. Surfing down the hill, a sound similar to a flute can be heard if it is a windless day. Camel rides and therapeutic sand bath are also available activities. The Crescent Moon Lake by the side of Mingsha Shan never goes dry and forms an oasis at the deserts edge. |

Jiayuguan Pass of Great Wall Standing in the southwestern coner of Jiayuguan City, Jiayuguan Pass is the end of western section of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. The imposing watch towers stands symmetrically in the east and west and offers a panoramic view of the vast expanse of Gobi desert and the landscape outside the Great Wall. Each year, the International Parachuting Festival is held in Jiayuguan Pass regularly. |
