Jade Curvings
Stone carvings in
Guilin had already reached a fairly high artistic level in the 7th century. The artists have inherited the traditional technique, and
with this as a basis, blazed new trails and further developed the art. They used jade from Luchuan and stones from Dongxing, both in
Guangxi, as material and carved according to their shape and quality. The landscape, flowers, birds, fishes, insects, animals, celestial
beings, human figures, imitations of ancient vases and stoves carved by them are all exquisite pieces of handicraft.
Bamboo Curvings
"Brush Pot
Imitating Lacquerware" is indeed a masterpiece of art, The artists employ the technique of line carving, carve Guilin land-scape and
flowers, birds, fishes, insects on bamboo. The arrangement of Guilin landscape on the pot is excellent. When treated with lacquer, the
carving on the pot rivals a Chinese traditional painting.
"Square Shaped Bamboo Stick" is another piece of art. The bamboos are from Long Shang Hua Ping, a secluded mountain area seldom
trespassed by man. The artists make precious and beautiful square-shaped sticks unique in their style.
"Chopsticks with Engraved Designs" are loved by all. Guilin landscape is engraved on the yellow face of the chopsticks. Light-yellow in
color. the chopsticks look like ivory. They are artistic pieces both for enjoyment and practical use. Cheap, beautiful and practical.
