Built in 7th century, the Jokhang Temple is the
oldest wooden-and-stone structure in Tibet and also
one of the Tibet's holiest temples. The Jokhang
Temple, located in Barkhor Square, is the noisy and
colourful heart of Lhasa. The main entrance to the
Jokhang Temple is marked by a huge golden,
eight-spoke Dharma wheel flanked by 2 deer. It
represent the Buddhist eightfold path to
enlightenment and 2 deer serve as the reminder that
Buddha gave his first sermon in a park. The Large
Scripture Hall is the centre of the imposing temple,
symbolizing the centre of the universe. Nowadays,
the temple is a great spot to watch modern Lhasa
life in Barkhor Square. |
