Lhasa facts
Lhasa has a fantastic array of exotic items and there are a number of truly unique items to purchase. Pulu is hand-woven cloth made from wool and most clothing in Tibet is made from this matierial. Tibetan joss sticks are from local plants and are seen everywhere. Tibetan knives are both decorative, and practical, most Tibetan carry one. The knives are inlaid with gold and silver with bone or wood handles. Another item that should be on the shopping list is the splendid Tibetan tankas which are Buddhist paintings. They are a part of Tibetan history and can be seen hanging from walls, often beautifully intricate and bold in color.

Tibet Lhasa Festivals
Tibetan New Year
Time: 1st day of the first Tibetan lunar month, or Feb or Mar.
Activities: People dress up, greet each other for a happy New Year with qima & barley wine, singing and dancing to welcome the New Year.
Butter Lamp Festival
Time: 15th day of the first Tibetan lunar month.
Activities: Lamas and artisans make butter sculptures of figures, flowers, birds and animals and display it on the shelves at Jokhang
Temple.
Auspicious Deva Day
Time: 4th Tibetan lunar month.
Activities: During the day, Tibetan people worship the Buddha and eat neither meat nor slaughter. On the 15th day, Tibetan people dress
up, singing and dancing and having banquets to commemorate the bird, death, and becoming nirvanic, of Sakyamuni.
Mountain Worshipping Festival
Time: 4th day of the 6th Tibetan lunar month.
Activities: During the festival, Tibetan people take food and worship the mountain god in mountains nearby.
Xueden Festival
Time: 1st day of the 7th Tibetan lunar month, or Aug or Sept.
Activities: In Tibetan language, Xueden means "yogurt banquet". Artists give performance at Norbu Lingka. An annual ceremony of shining
the Buddha is held at Jokhang Temple.
Fruit-Awaiting Festival
Time: Before harvest in autumn.
Activities: The festival will last 1 to 3 days. Tibetan people will pray for a good harvest of highland barley and wheat heads with
hadas, singing and dancing to the beating drums and gongs in the field and participate in horsace.
Bathing Festival
Time: 7th Tibetan lunar month, or Aug or Sept.
Activities: Tibetan people will go bathing, washing clothes and play in the water. The water during this week is held to be extremely
holy and clean, which can cleanse dust, cure disease and good health.
