Heritage Sites: Longmen Caves
Basic Facts
Being capital city for 13 dynasties including the Xia, Shang, Western Zhou, Eastern Han, Sui, and Tang, Luoyang has a history of 1,200 years. Luoyang offers many places of historic interest, such as the Longmen Caves, the White Horse Temple, and also Ancient Tomb Museum. Luoyang has been reputed as the "Peony City", the Peony Fair is held from 15th to 25th of April regularly.

Longmen Caves The grottoes and niches of Longmen contain the largest and most impressive collection of Chinese art of the late Northern Wei and Tang Dynasties (316-907). These works, entirely devoted to the Buddhist religion, represent the high point of Chinese stone carving. |

White Horse Temple The White Horse Temple is located 12km east of Luoyang and it is the oldest Buddhist temple in China. The temple was first built in 68, the 11th year of Emperor Yongping's reign of Eastern Han (25 to 220) and was reconstructed both in Ming and Qing dynasties (1368 to 1911). |
