Tashilhunpo Monastery is located at the foot of Nyima Mountain, west of Shigatse, was first built in 1447 by Gedun Truppa, a disiple of Tsong-kha-pa, subsequently honored as the first Dalai Lama. The monastery has become the headquaters of successive Panchan Lamas and enshrines a 22.4-meter-high, gilded bronze, seated Buddha of Maitreya, the Buddha of Future.
