Shigatse Travel Guide

Shigatse is located in the southern part of Tibet and known as Tsang by Tibetans,which covers an area of 182,000 sq km. Shigatse Region consists of Shigatse City, 17 counties such as Gyangtse County, Sakya County, Tingri County, and a trading port called Zhangmu Town. The major inhabitants living here are Tibetans while other nationalities including Han, Hui, Mongolia, Manchu, and Miao have lived here for centuries. There are also some one thousand Sherpas living around Zhangmu, Tingri, and Dinggye.
Shigatse City which situated at the junction of the Yarlung Tsangpo River and the Nyangchu River, is the 2nd largest city in Tibet. The first Dalai Lama constructed the Tashilhunpo Monastery in 1477. From then on, Shigatse City started to be the political, economical and cultural center of Tsang. There are couple of highlights surrounding Shigatse such as Palkhor Monastery , Shalu Monastery , Sakya Monastery make Shigatse city a must see destination of holy Tibet.
Gyangtse County of Shigatse Region is the most important pass from Lhasa to Shigatse. One can head to Lhasa, Shannan, Shigatse City, Tingri, Yadong and Zhangmu from this busy county. The Moun Everest located in Tingri County is the peak of the world. Every year, thousands of tourists and mountaineers from all over the world, come to witness and challenge the majestic 'Goddess the Third'.
Zhangmu is known as an important trading port and a border town between China and Nepal. Many visitors enter or exit Tibet through this busy town.
