Nanjing Pedestrain Rd.
The No 1 commercial road in China, Shanghai Nanjing Road, had been established historically for business. In the early
20th century, there were only four department stores along this stretch. Today, it has become the No 1 place for shopping in the city.
The money at work in the road has encouraged many companies and business over the years to set up bases near here. Nanjing Road is
fantastically located, stemming off the Huangpu River and the Bund at a right angle and linking the city's main commercial and
residential districts to the mouth of the river. The road to the east of Xizang Road is called Nanjing Dong Road while the road to the
west is known as Nanjing Xi Road.
In the past few years, mammoth changes have taken place here. The street was beginning to look a little down at heel and Huaihai Road
was pulling the wealthier customers away from this street. A huge improvement plan was put into action and completed just in time for
Chinese New Year 2000. New shopping centers have been erected and a large section of the street has been pedestrianised. In the evenings,
the street looks at its best, with neon lights and advertising billboards illuminating the glorious buildings along the road.
The Bund
As a symbol of Shanghai, the Bund is situated at the juncture of the Wusong River and the Huangpu River.
A group of tall buildings of different styles built along the Bund, forming an irregular skyline. It was the political, economic and
culture center of the foreign powers in Shanghai after the Opium War in 1840.The bund was a symbol of "adventurers` paradise".
The Bund of Shanghai today is the place where the tourists are sure to visit.
Former French Concession
Known as the most romantic slice of Shanghai, the Former French Concession remains much to see around this former colonial area.
Leafy birch trees scaffoldings line the sentimental lanes of this colonial quater. The northern border of this area runs west from the Old
City to Jinan Park, and makes up the area south of Yanan Park.
The best way to reach the classical arteries of this area is from the People's Square.
