Juyongguan Great Wall or Juyong Pass 居庸关 is located in the 18-kilometer-long Guangou Valley of Changping District, Beijing, which is about 50 kilometers from central Beijing. It is one of the three greatest mountain passes of the Great Wall of China. The other two are Jiayuguan and Shanhaiguan passes in Hebei Province and Juyongguan Pass in Gansu Province of China.
Juyongguan pass and the Cloud Platform gate was built here in 1342 CE. The Pass is roughly circular with a perimeter of about 4,142 meters and consists of two sub-passes, one in the south, one in the north, respectively called 'Nan Kou' and 'Badaling'.
The name Juyongguan Pass was used by 3 dynasties. It was first used in the Qin Dynasty when first Emperor Qinshihuang gave the orders to build the Great Wall of China. The Pass served as a natural barrier to the capital of Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) as well as Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Many fierce battles were fought in Juyongguan Pass.
Within the Pass, there is a Yuan era Cloud Platform remains which was built in 1342. This white marble made platform is 9.5 metres in height. Three white pagodas were atop the platform and were destroyed in early Ming Dynasty. There was a temple named Taian built atop was destroyed in 1702.
